MIAMI, Florida – Women’s football in Mexico continues to grow with every year and perhaps no player better epitomizes that than Alicia Cervantes.

The 29-year-old Mexico and Chivas FW was a headache for opponents of all kinds all throughout the year, making her a nominee for the 2022 Concacaf Women’s Player of the Year award.

Cervantes started her 2022 with plaudits for her 2021 when she was recognized in January 2022 as the world’s best scorer for the previous year by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), sharing the honor with Lucie Martinkova of the Czech Republic.

Cervantes then backed up that distinction with another top performance in Liga MX Femenil with Chivas, with whom she finished as the Top Scorer for the 2022 Liga MX Femenil Clausura with 14 goals, including two in the 4-3 aggregate win over Pachuca in the Final.

She then followed that up with another five goals for the Guadalajara club in the 2022 Liga MX Femenil Apertura, as Chivas finished as semifinalists.

Her strong performance throughout the year earned Cervantes the Golden Ball for the 2022 Liga MX Femenil season.

Cervantes also showed off her goal-scoring acumen at the international level with Mexico.

Overall, she played in eight matches in 2022 with Mexico and scored five goals in 2022 Concacaf W Championship Qualifying, including a hat trick in the 11-0 victory over Anguilla.
