Guatemala’s Martinez thriving in Italy with Pomigliano

New waters are meant to be charted and Guatemalan international forward Ana Lucia Martinez has been doing it her whole career.
With Guatemala, Martinez featured in Concacaf World Cup Qualifying for 2011 and 2015, while also scoring four goals in seven games in 2012 Concacaf Women’s Olympic Qualifying.

MIAMI – New waters are meant to be charted and Guatemalan international forward Ana Lucia Martinez has been doing it her whole career. From her home country to Europe, she is making a name for herself in every team in which she plays.

As part of the Guatemalan Women’s National Team, she has a long history with La Bicolor, representing her country on more than one occasion, helping them go forward in every match they encounter.

With Las Chapines, Martinez featured in Concacaf World Cup Qualifying for Germany 2011 and Canada 2015, while also scoring four goals in seven games in 2012 Concacaf Women’s Olympic Qualifying.

The 32-year-old currently plays in the Serie A, the first division of women’s football in Italy, for Pomigliano Calcio Femminile. She is one of the regular starters of the squad, who are fighting to rise up in the table, as currently sit in eighth position.

But this is not the first European experience for Martinez. In fact, she has had quite a journey when it comes to European football, making history along the way. In 2015 she signed with the Spanish team Rayo Vallecano, making her the first Guatemalan woman to play in the Spanish league.

Rayo Vallecano wasn’t the only team she played for in Spain. Later on, Martinez signed with Sporting Huelva, where she played from 2016 until 2018, when she made the move to another team in the same country, Madrid CFF.

Italy was her next destination, in which she has left her mark in Napoli and Sampdoria in Serie A, and Roma C.F. of Serie B, the second tier, before landing in her current team.

In addition to the Serie A, Pomigliano Calcio Femminile is playing for the Italian Super Cup, in which Martinez has scored some of the most outstanding goals and has been recognized by the Italian Federation for her exploits.

Placed in Group G, they are now in second position of their group, ready to take the next matches to advance in the competition.

Whether at the national team level or with her club, Martinez continues to represent the best of Guatemalan women’s football.
