MIAMI – One of the most competitive leagues in Europe, the Division 1 Femenine, the French Championship, is about to begin. Every team is ready to face the next season with their best players, looking to become champions, including Costa Rica FW Melissa Herrera, who will be out to help Girondins de Bordeaux in every match this year.
After the international window that happened early in September, in which the Costa Rica Women’s National Team faced Colombia, Herrera flew back to France to prepare for her most challenging season since playing abroad.
Herrera has spent a lot of time with La Sele this year, playing in Monterrey at the 2022 Concacaf W Championship, in which they qualified to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia/New Zealand, their second time to do it after making their debut at Canada 2015.
Las Ticas got as far as fourth place in the CWC, proving why Costa Rica is a team to follow, and how they have developed as a team since 2015. Alongside Head Coach Amelia Valverde, La Sele has proved what consistency looks like, becoming one of the top teams in Concacaf.
After finishing in sixth place in the 2021-22 season, Girondins de Bordeaux reinforced their squad and prepared their players over the course of a month-long preseason, looking to improve their game and try new ideas on the field in their pursuit of moving up the table in 2022-23. After finishing with two goals in nine league games last season, Herrera hopes to play a big role in a rise up the standings.
Last year Girondins de Bordeaux faced big challenges against the teams at the top of the table and were able to deliver great results. This year, with the services of players like Herrera, they will look to take steps forward and challenge the likes of giants Olympique Lyonnais and Paris Saint-Germain.
Their debut game will be against Le Havre Athletic Club this Saturday, in which Herrera is expected to be one of the game-changers, not only in this match, but throughout the entire year. A season full of expectations, Herrera and the Bordelaises are ready to play.
