MIAMI – Football doesn’t stop, no matter the category. This is the case for Spanish team Rayo Vallecano and its new summer reinforcement, Panama international Rosario Vargas.
After last year's results, Rayo Vallecano is facing a new season in the Primera Federacion Fut Fem, the second tier category in Spanish women's football. Before the season started, they were looking to reinforce their squad with some new talent that would help them in their upcoming matches.
Mirroring Rayo Vallecano, Vargas has had a very intense and exciting end of season and summer, with both club and country, opening a window for others to see how the right back has developed as a player in the last few years.
This summer, along with the rest of the Panamanian Women’s National Team, she took part in the Concacaf W Championship played in Monterrey, Mexico, in which Las Canaleras got as far as fifth position, earning a place in the Intercontinental Playoffs, the tournament that will determine the final teams that enter the FIFA Women’s World Cup to be played next year in Australia/New Zealand.
Just a few days after closing a successful campaign with her national team, Vargas announced that after three seasons at Valencia FC, she would be changing airs, joining a historical club in Spain, Rayo Vallecano.
She quickly joined her new team, playing pre-season games while getting ready to face a new league and the challenges that would come with it.
Rayo Vallecano’s debut was at the beginning of September, in which the team saw a loss of 4-0 against RC Deportivo.
Rayo took this match to identify what they needed to adjust and are preparing themselves and their game plan for week two of the Primera Federacion Fut Fem league against Osasuna this Saturday.
A year that has been full of challenges for Vargas will continue, as she will be key for her team this season in their quest to go back to the first division in Spain, as well as getting ready with Panama to face their next big test: qualifying for their first Women’s World Cup.
