MIAMI, Florida – The four-time World Champions are ready to take on Australia/New Zealand. On Saturday, July 22, the United States Women’s National Team will make their debut in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand, starting their campaign to be the first team in history to win the trophy three times in a row.
Drawn into Group E, the USWNT will face World Cup debutants Vietnam, the Netherlands, in a rematch of the 2019 final in which the North Americans came away with a 2-0 victory, and Portugal, another team that is playing the tournament for the first time.
They qualified as the winners of Group A at the 2022 Concacaf W Championship in Monterrey, Mexico, keeping their perfect record of qualifying for every Women’s World Cup intact.
But in Mexico the team went all in, crowning themselves as Champions of the tournament and also qualifying to the 2024 Olympic Games to be played in Paris.
The USWNT is full of stars and key players that can change the game. One of them is the 2019 Golden Boot (six goals, three assists) and Golden Ball winner Megan Rapinoe, who will play in her fourth senior World Cup.
Rapinoe announced her retirement from football earlier this month, making this tournament her last and even more special for her and for the fans of the game around the world.
Then there is FW Alex Morgan, who is appearing in her fourth Women’s World Cup. Morgan won the Golden Ball at the 2022 CWC and won the Silver Ball at France 2019 after scoring six goals in six games.
Another player that has the world watching her every move is forward Sophia Smith. Named the 2022 NWSL Most Valuable Player, she scored one of the best goals at the CWC that same year, a goal that allowed her country to qualify for the tournament in the 5-0 win versus Jamaica.
A sensational young player, Smith will play her first World Cup and is expected to be a key player in every match with her ability to score big goals at crucial moments.
Ranked as the number one team in the world, the USWNT is ready to start their journey to add one more star to their crest.
