SOCHI, Russia – Germany scored two goals in each half and advanced to the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup final with a 4-1 win over Mexico on Thursday at Fisht Stadium.
The final-four result sets up a meeting between the reigning World Cup champion and Chile in Sunday’s decider, while Mexico will face Portugal in the match for third place earlier that day.
Leon Goretzka gave Germany an early 2-0 lead, striking from 21- and 12-yards out in the sixth and eighth minutes, respectively.
Mexico nearly got on the scoreboard before halftime. In the 39th minute, Hector Herrera saw his free kick be tipped over the crossbar by goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, shortly after Javier Hernandez shot over the crossbar from close range.
Timo Werner put the match out of reach in the 14th minute, slotting in unmarked from eight yards off an unselfish feed from Jonas Hector.
With a minute remaining in normal time, Marco Fabian got Mexico on the scoreboard with a “goal of the tournament” candidate. On a quickly taken free kick, Herrera tapped the ball to the Eintracht Frankfurt standout, who fired a right-footed past Ter Stegen from 34-yards out.
In the first minute of stoppage time, though, Amin Younes finished unhurriedly to restore Germany’s three-goal advantage and complete the scoreline.
Germany improved to 5W-5D-1L all-time against Mexico.
