HOUSTON, Texas – Honduras and Grenada will meet for the third time at the Concacaf Gold Cup when they match up in the second match of the day in Group D on Tuesday night at BBVA Stadium in Houston, Texas.
Making their third appearance in Concacaf’s summer showcase, Grenada faced Honduras in the group stage in its two prior participations. The Spice Boys will be looking for their first win against Los Catrachos after falling twice to the Central Americans.
The two nations first met at the Gold Cup in 2009 as Honduras took a 4-0 win with goals from Walter Martínez, Roger Espinoza, Melvin Valladares and Carlo Costly at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Their second encounter came just over a decade ago in a 7-1 win by Honduras - their largest win at the Gold Cup. Carlo Costly scored a hat-trick while Jerry Bengtson had a double in the encounter that took place at FIU Stadium in Miami, Florida.
Bengtson will be one of the returning players for Honduras as part of Fabian Coito’s squad for this edition. Oscar Boniek Garcia, who will be playing at his club’s home stadium alongside national team captain Maynor Figueroa, was also on the field against Grenada in 2011.
Both teams will feature plenty of exciting young talents who are looking to write their names into their nation’s history books. For Honduras, 25-year-old Alberth Elis returns with more international experience in his boots as he looks to be the primary scorer in attack.
Grenada have a 25-year-old forward of their own as the player to watch during the tournament in Jamal Charles. With four game-winning goals, Charles led Grenada to the top spot in Group A of League B in the 2019–20 Concacaf Nations League.
