HOUSTON, Texas – Mexico’s 2-1 victory over Canada in the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup semifinals was full of emotions for the winning side.
Earlier in the day, the Mexico players learned of the passing of MF Jonathan dos Santos’ father. That was then followed by an intense and emotional clash with Canada that saw El Tricolor take the victory with a dramatic winning goal from Hector Herrera deep into second half stoppage time.
It was the type of day that further accentuated the strong bond held by the Mexican squad.
“We’re like a band of brothers. We’re very happy, very excited to be able to experience this moment with my teammates, and I think it’s a very united group, very healthy,” said Mexico MF Orbelin Pineda an interview with Concacaf.com.
“We’ve gone through some very difficult things. It happened tonight with Jona, but all we can do is help him, support him, be there for him at this moment,” added Pineda.
Mexico’s victory now sets the stage for what should be another memorable Final with the United States, especially in a worldwide destination like Las Vegas.
“We’re going to play our game; we’re going to give our best. That is the most important thing, the most basic thing. We’ll look to control the game like we always do, propose to do things well and propose to do things in the best way possible. And we will enjoy the final because it is something that doesn’t happen every day,” concluded Pineda.
