MIAMI, Florida – Concacaf is using this time to reflect on the history of the Confederation’s competitions, including its premier national team tournament, the Concacaf Gold Cup.
Many top players have suited up for their respective national teams in the Gold Cup, but the tournament’s top five all-time goal-scorers are in a class of their own.
It starts with the Gold Cup’s all-time leading scorer, Landon Donovan of the United States, who over the course of six different Gold Cups scored 18 goals.
Sitting in second place is Donovan’s countryman, Clint Dempsey, who found the back of the net 13 times in five different editions. Most memorably for Dempsey was his 2015 Gold Cup in which he took home the Golden Boot with seven goals, including a hat trick in a 6-0 win over Cuba in the quarterfinals.
Third on the Gold Cup scoring chart with 12 goals is Mexico’s Luis Roberto Alves, also known as ‘Zague’. The former Club America legend only appeared in two Gold Cups, scoring just one goal in the first ever edition in 1991.
However, the 1993 Gold Cup is largely remembered as the moment when Zague scored 11 goals, which remains a tournament record, including seven goals in a 9-0 win versus Martinique.
Another Mexico legend sits in fourth place on the scoring chart and is the lone active player in the top five. With his two goals in the 2019 tournament, Mexico MF Andres Guardado has 12 Gold Cup goals to his name.
Guardado has appeared in four Gold Cups, winning three of them, with his best output being in 2015 when he scored six goals, including goals in every knockout round match, to win the crown with Mexico.
Rounding out the top five is former Panama FW Blas Perez, who appeared in six straight Gold Cups and scored in five of them for a total of 11 goals.
It is no coincidence that in two of his most prolific tournaments in 2005 (3 goals) and 2013 (3 goals), Panama reached the Final.
