Team Profile
Official Name
Guadeloupe looks to return to the Concacaf Gold Cup group stage for its fifth appearance but will need to get past Antigua and Barbuda and the winner of a tie between Guyana and Grenada in the Prelims to do so.
Les Gwada Boys certainly have pulled off some Gold Cup accomplishments before. The team’s best finish came in 2007 when it went all the way to the semifinals, falling 1-0 to Mexico in Chicago. The next Gold Cup, they were back in the quarterfinals, but haven’t advanced to the knockout stage since.
This time around, a mix of experienced internationals and new additions will attempt to change that and put together another deep run.
At the back, veteran DFs Mickael Alphonse and Meddy Lina each have represented Guadeloupe for years, while FW Jordan Tell and MF Jordan Leborgne each will be looking to add to their cap totals after making their international debuts this year.
Others were involved in the last Concacaf Nations League cycle, like FW Thierry Ambrose, who netted three CNL goals, and GKs Brice Cognard and Davy Rouyard.
Overall, Guadeloupe have accumulated a Gold Cup record of 5W-2D-10L record, with 18 goals scored and 26 conceded
All-time Guadeloupe Gold Cup scorer Matthias Phaeton accounts for three of those 18 goals, while David Fleurival, Brice Jovial and Jocelyn Angloma have two each. Phaeton scored all three of his goals in the 2021 tournament.
Stephane Auvray has the distinction of the most Gold Cup games played by a Guadeloupe player with 12, with Loic Loval just behind at 11 games.
Manager Jocelyn Angloma will feel comfortable calling on the old guard and his new recruits, himself ticking up the charts after five Gold Cup games managed, trailing just Roger Salnot as the coach with the most matches.
Angloma saw his team play well but inconsistently in the Concacaf Nations League, winning three and losing three to miss out on the automatic spot in the Gold Cup and go the qualification route.
Yet, Guadeloupe will be able to draw from its history and find belief it can go on a deep run in this tournament, once again turning heads in the region.
