Team Profile
As a global power in the women’s game and a rising threat in the men’s, the Canadian Soccer Association has been an important member of Concacaf since joining as a founding member of the confederation in 1961.
Its present is as exciting as its history is deep. The Canada women’s team won the gold medal at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, building upon previous medal performances and a number of World Cup knockout appearances, including a best-ever fourth place in 2003. Canada also won the Concacaf championship in both 1998 and 2010.
The senior men’s national team also has a Concacaf trophy in the case as champions of the 2000 Concacaf Gold Cup, in addition to qualifying for the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. A return to the World Cup may be in the cards soon, with Canada boasting an exciting generation of young players and competing in the final round of World Cup qualification on the road to Qatar.
Both senior squads and the youth squads will continue to search for silverware with trophies clearly now the standard for Canada. The men’s squad kept its spot in League A of the Concacaf Nations League, failing to advance from the group past eventual champion United States because of goal difference.
The women’s squad received automatic qualification to the 2022 Concacaf W Championship and will look to win the title for the third time.
