Team Profile

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association wasn’t among the founding members of Concacaf, but joining in 1964, three years later, means it has long been a fixture in the region and one of the standouts of Caribbean football.

The greatest moment for the men’s national team was its qualification for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, with the Trinidad and Tobago qualifying after winning an intercontinental playoff against Bahrain.

The team was filled with players now viewed as legends, including Dwight Yorke, Shaka Hislop and Stern John, the latter’s 70 goals still making him the leader in Concacaf when it comes to men’s international goal scorers.

However, the question now is how to recapture that magic, with Trinidad and Tobago failing to find a win in the inaugural Concacaf Nations League in 2019-20, as Honduras won the group and moved into the Final Four.

Martinique finished second ahead of Trinidad and Tobago, who now has to consider life in League B, though it hopes its stay will be brief. A first-round exit in World Cup qualification puts an even stronger spotlight on how Trinidad and Tobago can respond in the next edition of the CNL.

The Women’s Soca Warriors are regulars at the Women’s Championship, finishing third place in the inaugural edition in 1991 and taking part in every subsequent tournament.

More matches under the new format for World Cup and Olympic qualification announced by Concacaf will surely lead to more opportunities for the team to improve on its showing and, they hope, appear at the World Cup for the first time when Australia/New Zealand comes around in 2023.
