DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – Another big day of action is on the docket in the 2022 Concacaf Women’s Under-17 Championship in the Dominican Republic with the quarterfinals set for Wednesday.
Dominican Republic vs. Mexico 4:00 EDT
Beginning the day at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez in Santo Domingo will be a scintillating affair between high-flying Mexico and home side Dominican Republic.
In their first ever CWU17, the Dominican Republic have shown the poise of a veteran side in reaching the quarterfinal stage thanks to a 2-0 win against Haiti in the Round of 16. Julia Jimenez has stood out with three goals and will try to add to her total against a Mexico team yet to concede in the tournament.
Not only have El Tricolor registered four straight clean sheets to open the tournament, but they have poured in 42 goals, led by Valerie Vargas, who scored three of her team-leading eight goals in the 15-0 Round of 16 win over Guyana.
USA vs. Jamaica 4:00 PM EDT
The first game of the day at the Estadio Panamericano in San Cristobal pits reigning CWU17 champions United States against Jamaica.
Similar to Mexico, the U.S. have four clean sheets thus far and have outscored opponents 49-0, including an 11-0 triumph over Curacao in the Round of 16. Amalia Villarreal has accounted for seven of those goals, all coming in the group stage.
Jamaica reached the final eight by virtue of their 4-0 win against Cuba in the Round of 16. The Reggae Girlz were a close second behind Canada in Group F and will be brimming with belief thanks in part to Natoya Atkinson and her five goals.
Puerto Rico vs. El Salvador 7:00 PM EDT
The second game of the day at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez will be an enticing duel between Puerto Rico and El Salvador. Puerto Rico topped Panama 2-0 in the Round of 16 and will try to keep things going against an El Salvador side that has been very impressive.
The Cuscatlecas were a perfect 3W-0D-0L in the group stage and continued that momentum into their 10-0 win versus Saint Kitts and Nevis in the Round of 16. Carolina Ayala and Karoline Velasquez, with four goals each, will be ones to watch.
Canada vs Costa Rica 7:00 PM EDT
Wrapping up the day at the Estadio Panamericano will be Canada and Costa Rica. The Canadians dealt with a tough Honduras side in the Round of 16, overcoming a 1-0 deficit to win 4-1. Rosa Maalouf has been one of the stars of the tournament with nine goals, including a hat trick against Honduras, and will be called on again to lead the attack versus the Ticas.
Costa Rica counter with a team that is very tough in defense and opportunistic in attack, which should make for a tight contest on Wednesday.
