SAN CRISTOBAL, Dominican Republic – One of the fastest growing teams in women’s football, Haiti, will be seeking top honors in Group F of the 2020 Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship, beginning on Sunday at the Estadio Panamericano in San Cristobal.
A third-place finish for Haiti at the 2018 tournament was enough to send Haiti to the 2018 FIFA Women’s Under-20 World Cup for the first time ever.
Haiti will boast a team that had many players compete in the recently completed Concacaf Women’s Olympic Qualification. One in particular, MF Melchie Dumornay, is no stranger to excelling in Concacaf competition.
At age 14, Dumornay scored the winning goal for Haiti in a 3-2 win over Costa Rica in the 2018 Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship.
She then followed that up with a Golden Ball performance later that year at the 2018 Concacaf Women’s Under-17 Championship, scoring five goals as Haiti finished in fourth place.
Joining Haiti in Group F is Trinidad and Tobago, Saint Kitts and Nevis and Cayman Islands.
Like Haiti, Saint Kitts and Nevis will be relying on a core group of players that also featured in last month’s CWOQ.
The top two teams from the group will advance to the knockout round, in which they will meet teams from either Caribbean or Central American qualifying.
The winners of the CUW20 semifinals will qualify automatically for the 2020 FIFA Women’s Under-20 World Cup to take place in Costa Rica and Panama.
