MIAMI, Florida – Mexico begin their Group C campaign at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar with a key duel against Poland at the Stadium 974 in Doha, Qatar.

It will be the second ever World Cup meeting between the two sides. Poland captured a 3-1 win in their previous encounter at Argentina 1978. It will be the 35th match for Mexico against a European opponent, with El Tricolor hoping to improve upon their 9W-9D-16L mark against UEFA competition.

Mexico’s last World Cup opener against a European opponent was a memorable one, as they claimed a first ever win over Germany in a 1-0 final at Russia 2018 thanks to a Hirving Lozano goal.

Head Coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino is calling on many of the same players who guided Mexico to a Second-Place finish in the Final Round of Concacaf World Cup Qualifying for Qatar 2022.

FW Raul Jimenez, who had three goals in WCQ, is in the mix, as are attackers Lozano, Alexis Vega and Henry Martin, the latter two scoring two goals in qualifying.

El Tricolor are also boosted by a heavy presence of veteran players. Look no further than seasoned midfielder Andres Guardado, who is poised to play in his fifth World Cup.

Martino can also lean on the safe hands of GK Guillermo Ochoa, a player that always comes up big on the World Cup stage.

Mexico will need to be opportunistic in their scoring chances against a very dangerous Poland side that poured in 32 goals during UEFA World Cup Qualifying. Poland also boast one of the best goalscorer in the world in FW Robert Lewandowski, who scored nine goals in qualifying, the third-most in UEFA.

With Argentina and Saudi Arabia on the horizon for Mexico, a full three points against Poland will be paramount to their knockout round possibilities.
