AUSTRALIA – The Haitian Women’s National Team played their second 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup match in Group D on Friday evening at the Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide, Australia in a 1-0 defeat against China.

China started strong, having early chances and Haiti GK Kerly Theus, once again a key player for the Caribbean side, was called on to stop a free kick in the 23’.

Haiti would get an advantage in numbers when in the 29’, after a VAR revision, the referee showed a red card to MF Zhang Rui after a strong tackle to Haiti’s MF Sherly Jeudy, leaving China with 10 players on the pitch.

Haiti looked to make the most of their 11 vs. 10 advantage and got a second half spark from FW Melchie Dumornay, who was subbed on at halftime.

Dumornay had a chance to score in the 53’, but China GK Zhu Yu denied her with a great save, sending her direct shot above the crossbar.

The game swung China’s way in the 73’ when after a VAR revision the referee called a penalty for China after Haiti DF Ruthny Mathurin committed a foul in the box. China FW Wang Shuang was in charge of taking it, shooting a low shot to the left side, giving China a 1-0 lead.

Haiti never stopped trying to equalize and saw more scoring chances, but were unable to score, losing their second match of the tournament.

The next game for Haiti will be against Denmark on Tuesday at the Perth Rectangular Stadium in Perth, Australia.
