Costa Rica bow out in Round of 16 at 2024 FIFA Futsal World Cup

MIAMI – Costa Rica fell 5-nil against Brazil in the Round of 16 in the FIFA Futsal World Cup Uzbekistan 2024 on Tuesday at Bukhara Universal Sports Complex in Bukhara, Uzbekistan.

Minor Cabalceta had a strike on goal in the 3’ from long range but was denied by Brazilian goalkeeper Willian.

Marcel opened the scoring in the 5’ to place the five-time winners in the lead. Cabalceta nearly equalized in the 6’ but could not connect in front of goal on a long pass from goalkeeper Cesar Vargas.

Felipe Valerio extended the lead in the 12’ as Brazil took a two-goal lead into halftime.

Costa Rica attempted to cut the deficit in the second half with strikes from Gilberth Vindas in the 25’ and Edwin Cubillo in the 27’. Leandro Lino would add a third for the South Americans in the 28’, furthering the gap on the scoreboard.

Cabalceta, Yosel Leon and Jean Salas had looks in the 31’. Cabalceta followed with other attempts in the 32’ and 35’.

Neguinho earned a brace with goals in the 36’ and 40’ to seal the victory for the Brazilians.

Costa Rica exits the tournament in the Round of 16 for the second time. The nation also reached the knockout stage for the second time in four consecutive editions.

The defeat ended the participation of Concacaf nations in the tournament. Panama, Guatemala, and Cuba exited the tournament in the group stage.
