TIJUANA, Mexico – After only 42 Liga MX appearances, Javier Guemez is in line to make his international debut after being called up by Mexico head coach Miguel Herrera for upcoming friendlies against Honduras and Panama.
The 22-year-old’s rise has been meteoric, starting his career in the third division with Dorados de Sinaloa during the 2007 Apertura and playing in seven games. In 2013, he moved to Liga MX side Club Tijuana, with which he featured in seven CONCACAF Champions League matches as the Xolos made a run to the semifinals.
“This is the best moment for me,” Guemez said. “I am in a great moment in my football career and this (call up) arrives at the right time.”
Despite his relative youth, the midfielder fully realizes that the opportunity to play for Mexico comes with many obligations.
“It is a great responsibility to represent your country and also to represent your club in the national team is a double commitment,” Guemez expressed. “We have to represent them both in the best way possible. We have to use the values you learn here, which is the identity of the club.”
Guemez will link up with his new Tricolor teammates on Sunday at the Mexican Football Federation’s High Performance Center to prepare for the friendlies on October 9 in Tuxtla Gutierrez and October 12 in Queretaro.
