BURIRAM, Thailand – Curacao is champion of the 2019 King’s Cup after defeating Vietnam 5-4 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in the Final played on Saturday in Buriram, Thailand.
The King’s Cup has served as Curacao’s preparation for the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup, and the Caribbean nation should be feeling plenty confident as it heads into the tournament next week after posting a 3-1 win versus India earlier in the week, followed by Saturday’s result.
The Concacaf side broke the deadlock in the 58’ through Jurich Carolina, only to see Vietnam’s Pham Duc Huy pull his side level in the final minutes.
Matters had to be settled from the penalty spot, where Curacao proved superior as a Vietname effort that went over the crossbar served as the difference.
For Curacao, it is its second trophy won in the last three years, in addition to winning the 2017 Concacaf Caribbean Cup.
Curacao will open its 2019 Gold Cup campaign on Monday, June 17 in Group C versus El Salvador.
