ATLANTA, Georgia – Quarterfinal play at the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup commences on Saturday with a doubleheader at the Georgia Dome.  In the opener, Panama (5th quarterfinal appearance) takes on Cuba (2nd app.), followed by an encounter between two-time defending champion Mexico (8th app.) and Trinidad & Tobago (2nd app.).

On Sunday, the quarterfinals conclude with another doubleheader at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland: United States (8th app.) v El Salvador (4th app.) and Honduras (6th app.) v Costa Rica (8th app.).

The first four editions (1991-98) of the Gold Cup did not include a quarterfinal stage.  During those tournaments, the top four teams progressed directly to the semifinals.

In 2000 -- the only year in which neither Mexico nor the United States won the competition – quarterfinals were introduced for the first time.  Doubleheaders were played in Miami (Orange Bowl) and Los Angeles (Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum), with eventual champion Canada, Colombia, Peru and Trinidad & Tobago progressing to the final four.  Three of the four quarterfinal games that year were decided either after extra time or penalty kicks.

This year, the quarterfinals will be held in two first-time Gold Cup venues.  Will there be surprises equal to those in 2000?
