Haiti storms back to beat Canada and earn semifinal spot

HOUSTON, Texas – Haiti stormed back from a two-goal deficit to defeat Canada 3-2 in the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup quarterfinals on Saturday evening at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

The victory sends Haiti to its first ever Gold Cup semifinal.

Jonathan David wasted little time in giving Canada a 1-0 lead in the 18’. Alphonso Davies played a quick free kick to David, who had the time and space to fire in a shot past Haiti GK Jhony Placide for his sixth goal of the tournament.

Canada continued to find holes in the Haitian defense and a surgical pass from Scott Arfield into Lucas Cavallini allowed the Puebla man to round Placide and calmly stroke into open net for a 2-0 advantage.

Haiti looked to respond in the second half and an error from the Canadian defense in the 50’ allowed Duckens Nazon to swoop in and score to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The momentum stayed with Haiti and after getting fouled by Marcus Godinho in the area, Herve Bazile converted a penalty kick to pull Haiti level 2-2 in the 70’.

Haiti sensed a winning goal could be had, and it would find it in the 75’ when Nazon floated a pass into Wilde-donald Guerrier, who poked home a shot for the 3-2 final.

Haiti achieved the fifth comeback in the quarterfinals of Gold Cup history defeating Canada 3-2.
