DENVER, Colorado – A pair of headers helped Martinique collect its first win of the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup in a 3-0 victory over Cuba in Group A on Wednesday night at Broncos Stadium at Mile High in Denver, Colorado.
The two teams had their fair share of chances in the first half, with Cuba’s Arichel Hernandez nearly breaking the deadlock via header in the 30’.
It looked like it would be scoreless heading into halftime, but Martinique’s Joris Marveaux had other ideas and headed in a corner kick in the 45’ for a 1-0 lead to Les Matinino.
Martinique had the momentum and it carried into the second half, as Mickael Biron earned a penalty in the 58’, but Kevin Parsemain was unable to convert the spot kick.
Cuba GK Sandy Sanchez kept his team within a goal with a number of excellent saves, but Martinique would finally find its second when Stephane Abaul thumped in a header off a corner kick in the 70’ for a 2-0 advantage.
Martinique’s football was flowing freely and its day was capped when a slick Parsemain back-heel pass was stroked into net by Kevin Fortune for the 3-0 final.
