MEXICO CITY – Mexico head coach Juan Carlos Osorio announced Thursday a 23-man roster for this month’s FIFA Confederations Cup.
Many of the players who competed in the same tournament four years ago were named to the squad, including forward Javier Hernandez, who scored three goals in as many games in Brazil.
Also meriting selection were the Porto trio of Hector Herrera, Miguel Layun and Jesus Manuel Corona, as well as defender Oswaldo Alanis of recently-crowned 2017 Liga MX Clausura champion Guadalajara.
Defender Rafael Marquez is the only player in the side with a Confederations Cup winners’ medal. In 1999, the now 38-year-old defender played the entire 90 minutes as Mexico earned a 4-3 win over Brazil in the final.
Mexico will open Group A play on June 18 against Portugal, before facing New Zealand (June 21) and host Russia (June 24).
