KINGSTON, JAMAICA – Damion Lowe scored Jamaica’s game-winning goal in the 3-2 victory over Honduras, sending the home fans happy in the country’s first time hosting the Concacaf Gold Cup at the Independence Park Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica.
“It’s an awesome feeling that I was able to score in front of my family and in front of the home crowd. It’s a long time coming and the history with my dad. We’ve been fighting and trying to lift the nation and have them buy into us and have the full support and I think today we got that,” said Lowe to Concacaf.com after the match.
The defender Lowe is the son of former Jamaican forward Onandi Lowe, the national team’s second all-time top scorer with 27 goals.
The senior Lowe represented Jamaica in the 1998 and 2003 editions of the Gold Cup, scoring in the latter, and was part of the country’s 1998 FIFA World Cup team.
He also had a knack of scoring against Honduras.
“It means a lot because my dad’s last international goal was against Honduras, my first international goal was against Honduras two years ago in Houston, where we won 1-nil, then I got another goal this year so I’m elated,” added Lowe.
Monday night’s goal is only the younger Lowe’s second with the national team.
Part of the 2017 team that finished as Gold Cup runners-up, Lowe is ready to help his side to another successful run in this edition of the tournament. He returns to the site of his first international goal with all the intention of helping Jamaica leave victorious against El Salvador on Friday.
“Houston is a lucky stadium for me, so hopefully I can get on the scoresheet again, but it’s a team sport so as long as my team gets the win I’ll be happy,” concluded Lowe.
