CHARLOTTE, North Carolina – For the second consecutive Concacaf Gold Cup, Martinique has pocketed a victory following its 3-0 triumph over Cuba last Wednesday in Denver.
After a disappointing 4-0 loss in its opener against Canada, it was important for Martinique to have the performance that it did against Cuba.
Instrumental in the win was FW Kevin Fortune with a goal and a pair of assists to give Martinique the confidence boost it needs to face Mexico in its group stage finale on Sunday.
“It’s a big satisfaction for us, we had to better than we did against Canada,” said Fortune in an exclusive interview with Concacaf.com.
“We were able to put our values on display and now we know what we have to do against Mexico,” added Fortune.
There is no question that for Fortune, playing in the Gold Cup is a huge motivation.
“Personally, I’m very proud. I want to make my family proud. It’s a big competition for us, for Martinique. I believe that in this competition Martinique is able to show some good things and it’s on us to put those things on display,” said Fortune.
Heading into the contest against Mexico, Martinique will know what kind of result it needs in order to qualify for the quarterfinal round.
There is sure to be plenty of planning in the works before Wednesday, but at the end of the day, Fortune says it is up to the players to execute on the field.
“We’ll do everything we can to beat Mexico. There’s no other option. We have to show what we can do; we have to beat them. The keys are to follow the game plan and do what our coach says; we have to add our values to that and then the win should be there,” concluded Fortune.
