DALLAS, Texas – Both Mexico and Guatemala will be seeking their first win of the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup when they square off in Group A action on Wednesday night at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas.
Mexico opened their Gold Cup campaign with a frustrating 0-0 draw with Trinidad and Tobago in which El Tricolor had seven shots on goal, but were unable to find a way past brilliant Trinidad and Tobago GK Marvin Phillip.
Still, there were many positives to take away from Mexico’s performance in their opener. Hector Herrera delivered a top display, running the show in midfield and setting up the likes of attackers Rogelio Funes Mori and Jesus Corona with scoring chances.
That trio will now try to find the reward of a goal when they clash with familiar Gold Cup opponent Guatemala.
The two nations have faced each other on seven previous occasions in the Gold Cup, with Mexico owning a 5W-2D-0L record, with 12 goals scored and just three conceded.
The last Gold Cup match between Mexico and Guatemala came in the 2015 edition when they played to a 0-0 draw.
Guatemala will be aiming for a similarly strong defensive performance on Wednesday after suffering a 2-0 defeat to El Salvador in their opening match on Sunday night.
It will also be imperative for Guatemala to get attacking players Jairo Arreola, Luis Martinez and Marvin Ceballos involved early and often in attack. Martinez comes into the Gold Cup in good form, having scored a pair of goals in the Prelims.
Two teams in need of three points should make for a wide-open affair on Wednesday.
