PASADENA, California– It seems that recently anything that Rodolfo Pizarro touches in Concacaf competition has turned to gold.
With the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup set to start on Saturday, the Mexico MF is in the position of achieving a unique Concacaf trifecta.
It dates back to the 2018 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League when Pizarro, as a member of Chivas, led the Guadalajara-based outfit to its first-ever SCCL title and just the club’s second Concacaf club crown.
In the tournament, Pizarro played in all eight matches for the Liga MX club and scored in the final first leg in a 2-1 win at Toronto FC.
For his efforts, Pizarro took home the Best Young Player award for the 2018 SCCL.
A year later Pizarro was back at it in the SCCL, only this time as a member of Monterrey.
Like in 2018, Pizarro played in each of the Rayados’ eight SCCL matches, starting in seven, and tallied a goal in Monterrey’s 5-2 away win at Sporting Kansas City in the semifinal second leg.
For the second straight year, Pizarro would win the SCCL as a player, as Monterrey defeated city rivals Tigres in the Final.
Just over a month after his second straight SCCL conquest, Pizarro will look to add another title-winning chapter, this time as a member of the Mexican National Team in the Gold Cup.
Pizarro has been impressive under new Head Coach Gerardo Martino, appearing in three of Mexico’s four friendlies to start 2019, and scoring a goal in Mexico’s 3-1 win over Venezuela last week.
After starring in Concacaf competition at the club level, the stage is now set for Pizarro to thrive once again and possibly add another Concacaf trophy to his already impressive collection.
