MOSCOW -- Portugal rallied to earn a 2-1 victory over Mexico after extra time in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup third place match on Sunday in front of 42,659 fans at Spartak Stadium.
It was a rematch of their group stage encounter on June 18, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
After a scoreless opening forty-five that saw Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa save Andre Silva's 16th-minute penalty kick, the CONCACAF champion took a 1-0 lead nine minutes into the second half.
Carlos Vela missed on an attempt from Javier Hernandez’s cross from the left-end line, but the ball deflected off Portuguese defender Luis Neto and inside the near post for an own-goal.
Just when it appeared that Mexico would secure its best finish in the competition since capturing the 1999 title, Pepe leveled in the first minute of stoppage time, jumping from seven-yards out to jab Ricardo Quaresma's right-sided cross into the back of the net.
Portugal was awarded a second penalty kick in the 103rd minute, when Miguel Layun was judged to have handled the ball in the box as Gelson Martins attempted a flick. Adrien Silva drilled his effort home, giving the 2016 European champion a medal in a second consecutive competition.
Both teams finished the game with 10 players, with Nelson Semedo (Portugal, 106’) and Raul Jimenez (Mexico, 112’) being ejected in extra time.
