MIAMI, Florida – The Group Stage of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup wrapped up on Tuesday and did so in thrilling style with an amazing final round of matches in both Group C and Group D.

Tuesday night’s matches served as the exclamation point to what was a memorable slate of 24 group stage games.

Not only did the 6-4 Costa Rica win versus Martinique yield the highest scoring Gold Cup match ever, but Tuesday’s results produced a whopping 25 goals in four games, the most prolific night in Gold Cup history.

In addition to Costa Rica’s record-setting triumph, there was a 3-2 win for Guatemala versus Guadeloupe, a 4-2 Canada victory against Cuba and a 2-2 draw between Panama and El Salvador.

El Salvador’s late draw against Panama spoiled the Canaleros’ bid for a perfect group stage mark of three wins from three games. That meant that none of the 16 teams finished the group stage with a perfect record. It is just the fourth time in tournament history that has happened, with the previous instances coming in 2005, 2009, 2015 and 2017.

Curiously enough, both El Salvador goals in the 2-2 draw with Panama on Tuesday night were scored by a pair of brothers, Brayan Gil and Mayer Gil. Those two became the first two players born in Colombia to score a goal in the same Gold Cup match as naturalized players representing El Salvador.

Overall, there were a total of 88 goals scored in the 24 group stage games. FW Jesus Ferreira of the United States currently tops the scoring table with six goals, while Costa Rica’s Joel Campbell had the most assists in the group stage with three.

Mexico teammates Uriel Antuna and Edson Alvarez head up a pair of categories, with Antuna having the most shots on target (9) and Alvarez with the most passes (242).

Panama’s Jose Fajardo has the most goals via header (2), while no player had more ball recoveries (12) than Martinique’s Jonathan Rivierez.

Veteran FW Jerry Bengtson of Honduras also proves that some just get better with age, as he served as the oldest goalscorer in the group stage at 36 years and 85 days.

The U.S. scored the most goals in the group stage with 13 and were also the leaders in assists with nine, while fellow Group A side Jamaica were the most effective in their shooting, scoring 26.5 percent of shots taken.

Meanwhile, Mexico led all teams in shots on target (42), while the U.S. were the team with the most passes at 1,822.

Both at the individual and team level, the Gold Cup Group Stage delivered top performances and things should only get better going into the knockout rounds.
