MIAMI, Florida – Many of the players who were part of Mexico’s conquest of the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup will be back in the fold for Head Coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino, as El Tricolor seek to defend their crown in the 2021 tournament.
Among the heroes from the 2019 Gold Cup run who are back in the mix this year is MF Jonathan dos Santos, who tallied the winning goal in the 2019 Final in a 1-0 win over the United States.
Also aiding the cause will be defensive lynchpin Carlos Salcedo. The Tigres center back is fresh off of winning the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League with his club and will take aim at another top honor in Concacaf in the Gold Cup.
Martino will also be able to lean some mainstays who were unable to participate in the tournament two years ago, including star FW Hirving Lozano, veteran MF Hector Herrera and dangerous winger Jesus Corona.
There are also some new faces dotting Martino’s squad that will assuredly contribute to this year’s Gold Cup effort.
FW Rogelio Funes Mori is new to the Mexican National Team set-up, but the Monterrey man is capable of providing instant offense.
Another intriguing addition is Dos Santos’ Los Angeles Galaxy teammate, Efrain Alvarez. The 19-year-old California native played for Mexico in the 2019 FIFA Under-17 World Cup and has all the makings of being a creative playmaker for the next 10-15 years.
Alan Pulido is no stranger to the Mexican National Team setup, but he has never formed part of a Gold Cup team until now, and with six goals this season in MLS with Sporting Kansas City, the 30-year-old will arrive into the tournament in good form.
With some familiar faces and new blood, Mexico’s will once again fancy their chances of emerging as champion.
