MIAMI, Florida – Unlike their foes in Group A of the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup – Mexico, El Salvador and Curacao -- Trinidad and Tobago will hit the ground running in the tournament with two competitive matches under their belts in the last week after emerging as one of the three teams from the Prelims.
While Trinidad and Tobago experienced disappointment in not advancing from the First Round of Concacaf World Cup Qualifying for Qatar 2022, things have turned under the steady guidance of Interim Head Coach Angus Eve.
The Soca Warriors have been displaying a cutting edge in attack, evidenced by the seven goals they scored in their two Prelims matches, including a six-goal performance against Montserrat.
Trinidad and Tobago are also getting contributions from many different players up top. Kevin Molino, Marcus Joseph, Ryan Telfer and Neveal Hackshaw form a dangerous quartet going forward, and the likes of Reon Moore and Andre Fortune bring fresh legs and a nose for goal off the bench for Eve.
Trinidad and Tobago will also feel like they are in good hands in the back. GK Nicklas Frenderup did a superb job in the two Prelims matches, keeping his head during the deciding penalty shootout against French Guiana and making the save that sent his side to the group stage.
Frenderup also benefits from a strong defensive front. Jelani Peters and Aubrey David are an experienced set of center backs to keep Frenderup protected, while fullbacks Alvin Jones and Ross Russell make sure there are no breaches on the wings.
It will mark the Trinidad and Tobago’s 11th appearance in the Gold Cup group stage, and with the momentum they have picked up from the Prelims, the Soca Warriors will fancy their chances against their group opponents.
