Trinidad & Tobago seek big win vs. spoiler-driven Guatemala

DALLAS, Texas Trinidad and Tobago will be seeking a big win against a spoiler-minded Guatemala when the two teams meet to close out Group A on Sunday night at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

Trinidad and Tobago currently sit third in the group with one point (-2 goal difference) and are still alive with a chance of reaching the knockout stage. A healthy margin of victory against Guatemala and a sizable defeat for Mexico (+3 goal difference) against El Salvador could see the Soca Warriors into the final eight.

But first things first, Trinidad and Tobago must contend with a very motivated Guatemala side looking to end their Gold Cup on a positive note and play spoiler.

Guatemala suffered 2-0 and 3-0 losses to El Salvador and Mexico, respectively, but still had solid performances from the likes of Darwin Lom, who registered seven shots against Mexico, while Marvin Ceballos is a menace for opposing defense, drawing 10 fouls in the tournament.

GK Nicholas Hagen has also been a rock in the back, with seven saves against Mexico, giving him 18 in four Gold Cup matches.

Trinidad and Tobago are also seeking their first goal of the tournament and whenever MF Kevin Molino is on the field, the Caribbean side always have a chance. Molino leads the team in shots (6) and fouls received (11).

The Soca Warriors know they can also count on either Nicklas Frenderup or Marvin Phillip at GK. The former has 15 saves this far in the tournament, while the latter had seven in the 0-0 draw versus Mexico.

Sunday’s contest marks the fifth Gold Cup match between the two, with Trinidad and Tobago holding a narrow 2W-1D-1L advantage, including their last meeting in the 2015 group stage, which ended 3-1 in Trinidad and Tobago’s favor.
