Zardes: “You have to be ready when your name is called”

AUSTIN, Texas — Gyazi Zardes’ match-winning goal in the 86th minute against Qatar has given the United States men’s national team their 12th Concacaf Gold Cup final appearance.

The scoring play developed in midfield with Nicholas Gioacchini playing off Eryk Williamson. Gioacchini then received the ball inside the box, created a bit of space, and found Zardes, who slid in the winning goal. For Zardes, it was the quintessential team win.

“Our starters, they did an amazing job at wearing Qatar out, wearing their defenders out by making runs beyond the backline,” said Zardes after the match. “When the subs were able to come in, we're able to try to make a difference, and be more energized.”

Zardes collected his sixth Gold Cup goal in the victory to help the U.S. to their third consecutive final. He is participating in his fourth consecutive edition of the tournament and is hoping to lift the trophy for the second time in his career.

Part of the 2017 Gold Cup winning team and the 2019 runners-up, Zardes has both celebrated and faced disappointment in the final. He will hope to re-live the former when the U.S. faces Mexico on Sunday.

“I'm going to do whatever I can to try to make a difference,” said Zardes. “Every day in training, I'm giving my all. Every time I step on the field, I'm giving my all. I'm doing the best I can do and trying to just get better each and every single game.”

Zardes was influential off the bench, entering the match in the 63rd minute. It was his third contribution as a substitute, starting twice in the group stage, and the 29-year-old forward is ready for whatever role he is given in the final.

“At the end of the day, the decision is up to the coaching staff,” Zardes commented. “They have a plan and so far the plan has been working. But, if my name is called to start or to come off the bench, I have to make sure I'm mentally prepared and physically prepared.”

“When you plan a tournament, you have to be ready when your name is called,” Zardes added.
