Team Profile
The Dominican Republic Football Federation is working to build the game from the ground up. With a focus on youth national teams, it may not be long until the Dominican Republic’s senior national teams are fixtures in the late stages of Concacaf competitions.
The men’s national team finished second in its World Cup qualification group in 2021 and will enter the upcoming Nations League with ambitions that it can improve on its showing in the 2019-20 tournament when it finished third in a League B group that also included El Salvador, Montserrat and Saint Lucia. If so, an inaugural Concacaf Gold Cup appearance could be around the corner.
The Dominican Republic women’s team took part in a series of friendly matches in 2021, with a young squad preparing for Concacaf’s revamped women’s competitions and hoping to build on the semifinal run the U-20 Women’s squad made at the Concacaf U-20 Championships on home soil in early 2020.
The federation also hosted a number of FIFA World Cup qualifiers in 2021, with teams working to find common ground where they could play, as travel regulations complicated home matches during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The FDF recently launched one of the region’s newest leagues, with the Liga Dominicana de Futbol beginning play in 2015 and already seeing several teams taste success in the CFU Club Championship and take part in the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League.
