Team Profile
The Turks and Caicos Islands Football Association became a full Concacaf member in 1996, and with a population just below 43,000, it can be difficult to build something long-term. But the TCIFA is trying to do just that, bringing in experienced coaches, keeping the same players together and working to find opportunities for young players to develop abroad.
The vast majority of their all-time most-capped players are still active, and that’s thanks in no small part to the Concacaf Nations League. After sporadic contests in the past, CNL qualification and the first-ever tournament gave a chance for the men’s national team to grow together.
It worked well, with a Billy Forbes hat trick keying a 5-2 win over Sint Maarten for TCI’s first CNL win and a late winner from Forbes giving TCI a 3-2 result in Providenciales the next time the sides met. While Guadeloupe got the better of TCI each time, a core of the team is forming.
Now, the TCIFA hopes, the same will happen in the women’s game, with Concacaf’s new system for the Concacaf W Championship and the W Gold Cup similarly bringing more chances for managers to interact with their players, for players to face high-level competition and for a team to come together.
