Team Profile
After losing the first match of the 2019-20 Concacaf Nations League, the U.S. Virgin Islands men’s national soccer team would not be denied at the second of asking. After six minutes, the USVI was up 2-0 and saw out the result to nab a 2-1 victory over Saint Martin.
It was the only victory of the campaign, meaning the USVI will remain in League C for the upcoming tournament, but it showed the type of resolve the USVI has to find results. The Caribbean nation hopes that attitude will bear fruit in the future to move up into the ranks of League B.
Other evidence of a desire to improve is the Bethlehem Soccer Stadium, a facility designed for the sport that opened in 2019.
It served as the base for the first round of World Cup qualification, and while the USVI didn’t find another victory, it continues to improve and should have more competition at its level in the CNL.
The USVI women’s national team also is trying to find that result it can use to level up, with Kelsey Montano’s goal in a 4-1 loss to Saint Lucia in qualifying for the 2020 Women’s Olympic Qualification a building block for the Dashing Eagle going forward.
