Blackman, Rodríguez send Panama to 2025 CNL Finals and Gold Cup

PANAMA CITY, Panama – Panama and Costa Rica drew 2-2 in the second leg of their quarterfinals series in League A of the 2024/25 Concacaf Nations League, with Panama winning 3-2 on aggregate, on Monday at Estadio Rommel Fernández in Panama City, Panama. 

Los Canaleros rallied behind its home support to build on a 1-nil first-leg victory in San José, Costa Rica last Thursday. 

The visitors had an early chance to open the scoring and tie the game on aggregate through a penalty attempt in the 7’, but Panama goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera saved Warren Madrigal's strike.

César Blackman scored to give Panama the lead in the 14’, striking with a right-footed shot from close range after José Cordoba headed down a delivery from the left flank.

Costa Rica equalized in the 24’ through a right-footed drive from long range by Alejandro Bran. 

Panama reclaimed its lead right before the half in the 45+3’, with a left-footed curler from José Rodríguez to the top left corner of the goal from outside the box.

Alonso Martínez scored for Los Ticos to tie the score at 2-2 in the 73’, sending the ball to the back of the net with a right-footed finish inside the penalty area. 

Anthony Contreras had an opportunity to score a late winner for Costa Rica in the 90+7’, but his header inside the box was high above the crossbar.  

Panama won the series 3-2 on aggregate and advanced to the 2025 CNL Finals and 2025 Gold Cup.

Costa Rica closed out its 2024/25 CNL campaign and moves on to the 2025 Gold Cup Prelims.
