Cicilia keeps Bonaire rolling with second win over USVI

WILLEMSTAD, Curacao – Bonaire were able to take care of business on Tuesday afternoon at the Rignaal “Jean” Francisca Stadium as they comfortably defeated the US Virgin Islands by a score of 2-0 in Group A of League C.

Bonaire’s Ayrton Cicilia has been one of the best players in all of League C thus far and continued to prove his pedigree in the fourth minute when he bagged his fifth goal of the competition. Christopher Isenia fired a shot from a narrow angle on the left side, and instead of finding the net, it found Cicilia, who redirected it goalward and put Bonaire in front 1-0.

Isenia would set up the second goal as well, with a simple dump-off to Berry Sonnenschein, who took a few touches and then scored a clean left-footed effort in the 33rd minute. Bonaire would take their 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

The second half was quieter. Jett Blaschka slammed one off the post in the 69th minute that nearly pulled the US Virgin Islands within striking distance, but the bounce just didn’t go his way.

Bonaire were able to see out the rest of the match and clinch their third win in four matches. They now lead Group A with 10 points and are in an excellent position to win promotion and a spot in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup prelims.
