SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – El Salvador is gearing up for a pivotal clash on Saturday when it takes on Jamaica at the Estadio Cuscatlan in San Salvador.
Currently, El Salvador sits 14th in the 34-team table of 2019-20 Concacaf Nations League Qualifying and only a victory against the Reggae Boyz will allow them at least the chance to finish in the top 10 and to qualify for this summer’s Concacaf Gold Cup.
The Cuscatlecos will also need some other results to go their way in order to reach this summer’s 16-team tournament.
Yet for El Salvador, all it can control is Saturday’s match versus Jamaica and Head Coach Carlos De Los Cobos believes his squad has both the skill and the desire to overcome the Caribbean side.
“Jamaica is a strong team, we know that we have to avoid going body to body because they have the advantage, but we have to exploit the virtues that our team has,” said De Los Cobos to media on Monday.
“We are a national team with rich, technical skill, with a lot of mobility and I think we can do damage to them with the order that we have always shown, and that will surely allow us to be within reach of a victory if we work hard on the field,” added De Los Cobos.
De Los Cobos does not expect too many changes from the squad that fell 1-0 to Bermuda in Week 3 of CNLQ, although key veterans like MF Darwin Ceren of the Houston Dynamo and FW Nelson Bonilla of Bangkok United should provide an extra boost to the Central American outfit.
“The idea is clear, there won’t be much variation, we are already looking to finalize the line-up so we won’t make too many changes. We know that there is a base that has been playing and has done well. The incorporation of Darwin Ceren to the team is important for experience, for quality and it’s also good to have the arrival of Nelson Bonilla, who we know is doing a great job with his team,” concluded De Los Cobos.
