WILLEMSTAD, Curaçao -- Fans were treated to a classic in Willemstad as the Turks and Caicos Islands defeated Sint Maarten by a score of 5-2 on Thursday night.
The big names from both sides didn’t waste any time in making waves; Gerwin Lake put the hosts in front in the 9th minute for his 4th international goal in just three games.
But in the 18th minute Billy Forbes fired back for the Turks and Caicos Islands, becoming their top all time scorer with five in the process.
Sint Maarten earned a penalty and Lake converted in the 36th minute to retake the lead before halftime. Just like his adversary Forbes, “Smally’s” tally of five career goals is a national record.
The action refused to slow down, and just before the halftime whistle Forbes matched Lake again with a beautiful chip to level things up at 2-2.
Forbes had a chance for a hat-trick in the 59th but instead set up Jeff Beljour for a tap-in to give the Turks and Caicos Islands their first lead of the day.
Herby Magny followed up moments later with a magnificent strike from outside the box to double the lead. Forbes finally got his hat-trick via a penalty kick in the 87th minute to finish things off.
