Gerwin Lake and Sint Maarten’s dream of promotion

PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten — Gerwin Lake has burst onto the scene in the Concacaf Nations League with four goals in his first three matches, and the Sint Maarten winger has been unquestionably one of the best players in League C.

Lake lives and plays his club football in the Netherlands, but the chance to play across the Atlantic has been a treat.

“I really like to play these games because it just feels good to play at a high level against people from the other side of the world,” said Lake in an exclusive interview with Concacaf.com about his Nations League experience. “The football here is way different from Europe. The players are faster and stronger,” added Lake.

With six goals in his first four caps, including two against rival Saint Martin during the hard fought 4-3 Nations League qualification victory, it’s hard to argue that Lake isn’t already a historic figure for Sint Maarten.

“I’m very proud of what I’ve done. Since I’ve come to play for Sint Maarten I’ve scored in every game. But I’m proud of my team also. We fight together, we win and lose together,” added Lake.

Gerwin says that he and his teammates are following the dream every time they take the field for Sint Maarten. “Our dream right now is to get promoted up to League B.” He continued, “We’re trying to build a team so we can win games; that’s our priority now.”

Sint Maarten have one remaining match against the Turks and Caicos Islands, and they’re out for revenge. Despite taking the lead twice in the first half (via two goals from Lake) they were unable to hold on and lost 5-2 the first time the two sides met back in October.

“I really want to win this game. That game against Turks and Caicos, the first half we played so good, but the second half we let it slip away,” concluded Lake.

Sint Maarten will take on Turks and Caicos Islands on November 14 in Providenciales.
