Honduras’ CNL run to be led by Elis, Lozano

MIAMI, Florida A pair of European-based strikers head up the 2019-20 Concacaf Nations League Finals provisional roster for Honduras in Alberth Elis and Antony Lozano.

Since his transfer to Portuguese club Boavista from MLS side Houston Dynamo last year, the 25-year-old FW has eight goals in 28 matches and has been on fire during the month of May, with three goals in his last two matches.

Elis is already well-acquainted with scoring in the CNL, with two goals in three games for Honduras in League A.

Lozano has also enjoyed a noteworthy European season at Spanish side Cadiz. The recently promoted side made history last fall thanks to Lozano, who scored the lone goal in Cadiz’s 1-0 win at Real Madrid, the first ever win for Cadiz away at Real Madrid in 110 years.

Overall, the 28-year-old FW has scored three goals in 27 domestic league matches this season in Spain.

Like always, Honduras should be able to rely on the veteran leadership of DF Maynor Figueroa. The 38-year-old DF has more than 160 caps with the Honduran National team, including five Concacaf Gold Cups.

Figueroa was also a big reason why Honduras finished atop their group in League A of the 2019-20 CNL, starting all four matches for the Catrachos and contributing to three clean sheets.

Another weapon in the Honduras roster is FW Alexander Lopez, who was a key member of the Liga Deportiva Alajuelense side that won the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf League.

The playmaker started all five of Alajuelense’s matches and led his side in minutes played in the 2020 SCL (435). For his efforts, Lopez earned the Golden Ball Award as the tournament’s best player.

Rounding out the notable names in the Honduras preliminary roster is exciting MF Edwin Rodriguez. The 21-year-old Olimpia man in the last six months not only earned Best XI honors in the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League in helping Olimpia reach a first ever SCCL semifinal, but also a Best XI nod with his country at the 2020 Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship.

Rodriguez led Honduras to a fourth straight Olympics qualification and also scored a sensational goal for the Catrachos in the Final against Mexico.
