ROSEAU, Dominica – Saint Lucia claimed victory in their first match in Group C of League C of the 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League with a 1-0 win against Dominica at Windsor Park in
Roseau on Thursday afternoon.
The match began as a cautious affair. Saint Lucia controlled much of the possession and managed a few unthreatening shots, but neither side made a major breakthrough.
Perhaps the most noteworthy moment of the first half came in the 33rd minute, when Dominica
earned a dangerous free kick on the edge of the box, but Javid George sent it harmlessly over
the goal.
The game remained scoreless at the break.
But things would open up in the second half. In the 54th minute, Saint Lucia’s Andrus Remy had space down the right wing and sent in a sharp, low cross to Jevick Mac Farlane, who
completed a perfectly timed run to put the ball in the back of the net and put the visitors ahead, 1-0.
The deficit increased the urgency for Dominica, who quickly made a pair of substitutions and
earned another dangerous free kick in the 59th minute. This time Anfernee Frederick stepped up and rifled it towards goal, but a fine fingertip saves from fully outstretched Dominica GK Vino Barclett pushed the ball just a few inches wide.
In the 71st minute, Barclett then fielded a loose ball outside the area, giving Dominica yet
another free kick from right on the 18-yard line. Julian Wade fired low towards the wall and the shot pinballed around safely into Barclett’s hands.
Saint Lucia did well to absorb the increasing pressure from the hosts, and held on to secure the
victory and take a commanding position in Group C. They are already in first place and hold
games in hand over all opposition.
