Mexico begin title quest against rising Suriname

TORREON, Mexico – 2019-20 Concacaf Nations League runners-up Mexico will begin their quest for a first CNL title when they host a Suriname team on the rise in Group A of League A of the 2022-23 CNL on Saturday night at the Estadio Corona in Torreon, Mexico.

While Suriname have just one point through their first two matches, both coming against Jamaica, the recently promoted side have shown that they can go toe-to-toe with Concacaf’s top sides and will be looking to do the same versus Mexico.

It will be imperative for Suriname that their top goal scorers start finding their form, including 2019-20 CNL top scorer Gleofilo Vlijter, who is still searching for his first goal in this campaign.

Mexico begin their new CNL campaign on the heels of a pair of friendlies in which they failed to find the back of the net.

However, with proven CNL goal scorers like Uriel Antuna and Raul Jimenez, who had two each in the previous edition, and playmakers like Roberto Alvarado and Hirving Lozano (2 assists in 2019-20 CNL), the ingredients are there for Mexico to ignite their attack.

It will be just the second ever meeting between the two sides, with the first coming back in 1977 when Mexico won 8-1 in Concacaf World Cup Qualifying for Argentina 1978.
