MIAMI, Florida – Mexico and the United States were each in action over the weekend in international friendlies prior to the start of the Concacaf Nations League Finals on Thursday.
On Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Mexico overcame an early 1-0 deficit to top Iceland 2-1.
An Edson Alvarez own goal in the 14’ gave the European side a 1-0 lead, but El Tricolor would answer nicely in second half through a pair of scores from Hirving Lozano.
The first goal came in the 73’ when a giveaway at midfield led to a break, with Diego Lainez feeding Lozano and the Napoli man finding the back of the net with a right-footed finish.
Five minutes later in the 78’ Lozano was at it again, this time soaring through the air to meet a Hector Herrera cross and thumping a header into net to complete the 2-1 scoreline.
Mexico will next face Costa Rica on Thursday in the CNLF semifinals in Denver, Colorado.
Also in action over the weekend was the United States, who narrowly fell 2-1 to Switzerland on Sunday at Kybun Park in St. Gallen, Switzerland.
The U.S. could not have asked for a better start, as they grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 5’ when a half-clearance from the Swiss defense fell right to the feet of Sebastian Lletget, who promptly deposited the ball into net.
The home side would quickly respond though, and Ricardo Rodriguez brought Switzerland level, 1-1, in the 10’ with a shot that took a slight deflection of U.S. DF Reggie Cannon and spun into net.
The U.S. looked to regain control in the second half, but the Swiss would find the winning goal in the 63’ from Steven Zuber, who pounced on a loose ball deep in the area and scored.
The U.S. will next take the field on Thursday in the CNLF semifinals against Honduras.
