MIAMI, Florida – Ryan Telfer scored a goal and had an assist to spearhead a 3-0 victory for Trinidad and Tobago over Bahamas in Group C of League B of the 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League on Friday afternoon at Thomas Robinson Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas.
The result gives Trinidad and Tobago 12 points through five matches and sets up a winner-take-all affair with Nicaragua on the final matchday, with the victor earning promotion to League A and a berth in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup.
Trinidad and Tobago were in dreamland inside the first five minutes as a blocked shot fell right to the feet of Kareem Moses, who took a touch and delivered a long-range right-footed strike into the top left corner of net to hand the Soca Warriors a 1-0 lead.
The visitors doubled their lead to 2-0 in the 26’ thanks in large part to a hard-charging run from Telfer down the right flank that ended with a cross to the center and an easy finish into net for Joevin Jones.
Telfer then turned from provider to goalscorer by gathering in a pass from Alvin Jones and sending a composed finish past Bahamas GK Ian Lowe to make it a 3-0 affair in the 34’.
With the three-goal cushion, the Soca Warriors could play to their liking and patiently try to pick the Bahamas lock again. A fourth goal almost came in the 70’ in the form of a free kick from distance, with Kaile Auvray hammering a shot that rang off the crossbar.
That was followed three minutes later by Telfer missing his second goal of the day with a sizzling left-footed effort that thundered off the post. Jones almost had a second goal himself in the final minutes on two occasions, but fired wide of Lowe’s net on each chance.
Despite the misses, it was a commanding win for the Soca Warriors, who will wrap up at home against Nicaragua on Monday, while Bahamas will travel to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
