MIAMI, Florida – Tigres FW Andre-Pierre Gignac is already considered one of the best players in Concacaf and now the opportunity is there for the 35-year-old Frenchman to etch his name into the FIFA history books.

Through two matches at the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup in Qatar, Gignac leads the tournament in scoring with three goals, one ahead of Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich, who Tigres will meet in the Final on Thursday.

The 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League Golden Ball and Golden Boot winner is trying to become just the fourth Concacaf player to finish a FCWC as the tournament’s leading scorer.

The first Concacaf player to finish as the leading scorer at a FCWC was Alvaro Saborio of Deportivo Saprissa in 2005 when he scored two goals to help the Costa Rican club to a third-place finish. Saborio tied with three other players for the most goals scored in the tournament.

Former Monterrey MF Cesar Delgado, who participated in the 2011, 2012 and 2013 FCWC, accomplished that feat in both the 2012 and 2013 editions with Rayados.

In the 2012 FCWC, Delgado scored three goals to finish level with another player for top scoring honors, as Monterrey achieved a third-place finish in the tournament.

One year later in the 2013 edition, Delgado tied with three players for the most goals in the tournament with two, with Monterrey finishing fifth in the tournament.

Former Mexico international Gerardo Torrado also shared top scoring honors with two players after netting twice for Cruz Azul in the 2014 edition when La Maquina finished fourth.

Depending on of Thursday’s Final, Gignac could become the first Concacaf player to win a FCWC scoring title outright, and with two goals in the Final, Gignac would tie Delgado for the most goals scored by a Concacaf player in the FCWC (5).
