SUNRISE, Florida – Among those footballers who took part in the recently held 2018 Major League Soccer/Caribbean Combine, Kyle Edwards has already experienced much success in his career.
The forward/winger, who turned 21 on January 15, has earned 14 caps for St. Vincent & the Grenadines and submitted a pair of standout seasons with Ranger College in the United States (2016, 2017).
An opportunity to be seen by MLS scouts -- from January 9-11 at the Sawgrass Grand Hotel and Suites Sports Complex -- was energizing and instructive.
“It was a fantastic three days,” Edwards told CONCACAF.com. “I enjoyed myself and got to showcase my talents. They saw what I can do. They started giving me the ball a lot.
“I’m looking for a chance to move forward and get a professional contract. I learned that hard work brings success. The more you put the work in, the more results you’re going to get.”
Thanks to the urging of his older brother, Edwards -- best known for one-on-one and hold-up play -- launched his football journey at seven-years-old and worked up the local ladder to play for SVG power System 3.
He eventually earned a spot on the roster of Ranger College in Ranger, Texas, USA. There, Edwards hit the back of the net – and set-up others -- at an impressive rate. In 2017, the 5-foot-9 talent scored 20 goals and registered eight assists in 13 games. A year earlier, he posted marks of 10 goals and 14 assists.
Edwards pointed to the experience of playing with SVG stars Myron Samuel (25) and Oalex Anderson (22) as additional reasons for his development. The forwards, only slightly older than Edwards, have been outstanding internationally. Samuel has struck for 20 goals in 55 matches, while Anderson has netted 12 times in 24 outings (including five goals in 10 CONCACAF qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup).
“They’re calm, they’re fast and they can do so much with the ball,” commented Edwards on the duo.
Whether he ultimately inks a deal with a MLS club or continues his collegiate career at a four-year institution, improving on a daily basis remains Edwards’ primary objective.
“I plan to work on my game, getting my touches better and scoring more goals,” he finished.
All the while working to enhance one of the Caribbean’s most lethal strike forces.
