PARIS – The United States men’s national team concluded its best performance at the Summer Olympics in 24 years, bowing out of Paris 2024 after a 4-nil loss to Morocco in the quarterfinals on Friday at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

Team USA took part in the knockout stage for the first time since Sydney 2000. The team returned to the men’s Olympic tournament after a 16-year absence by winning the 2022 Concacaf U-20 Championship.

Patrick Schulte, the recipient of the Best Goalkeeper Award at the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup, started in goal for the United States and made a few saves early on.

Schulte pushed the ball over the crossbar in the 13’ as Ilias Akhomach took an attempt for Morroco.

In the 16’, Schulte made a save on a free kick attempt from Achraf Hakimi.

Jack McGlynn had an attempt on goal in the 19’ as the U.S. tried to get the match’s first goal.

Morocco took the lead in the 29’ after the U.S. conceded a penalty. Soufiane Rahimi converted the spot kick as the shot grazed by Schulte, who nearly got his hand to it.

Tanner Tessmann tried to equalize in the 49’, but Munir El Kajoui saved his attempt.

Ilias Akhomach struck inside the box in the 63’ to extend the Morocco lead by two.

Achraf Hakimi struck from the edge of the box in the 70’ to further the scoreline.

El Mehdi Maouhoub converted from another penalty kick opportunity in the 90’+1, ending the U.S.’s campaign.

Canada, U.S. women in quarterfinals on Saturday

Canada and the United States will both look to advance to the women’s Olympic soccer tournament semifinals when the quarterfinal bouts take place on Saturday.

The U.S. women are up first, facing Japan at the Parc des Princes in Paris. Team USA will participate in the women’s quarterfinals for the eighth occasion and seeks to advance to the semifinals for the seventh time.

Canada will face Germany later in the day at the Marseille Stadium in Marseille, France. Team Canada, who won gold at Tokyo 2020, looks to advance to the semifinals for the fourth consecutive occasion.

A win by both nations would set up an all-Concacaf semifinal for next Tuesday, August 6. France will take on Brazil and Spain will meet Colombia in the semifinals on the other side of the bracket.
