MIAMI, Florida – Costa Rica and Panama were among the teams earning key victories on Sunday in Concacaf Women’s Under-17 Championship Qualifying.
The day started at the FIFA Proyecto Goal in Costa Rica where the home side upended Guatemala 2-0 to take control of Group C.
Brigitte Monge scored in the 32’ and the lead was doubled in the 40’ by Brittany Castrillo, 2-0, to complete the victory.
Haiti got off to a great start in Group B at the Estadio Panamericano in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, with a 12-0 triumph over Barbados.
Pierreline Nazon (2’, 42’, 67’), Derline Saindate (12’, 40’, 59’) and Lourdjina Etienne (15’, 25’, 88’) each had hat tricks, while Nehemie Sainvilus (9’), Aslie Laguerre (16’) and Yvena Murat (30’) added their names to the scoresheet.
Honduras also emerged as winners on the day with a 5-0 victory against US Virgin Islands in Group D at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The top performer of the day for the Catrachas was Ashley Flores, who notched a hat trick with goals in the 12’, 38’ and 49’. Yatana Lopez got Honduras off to an early lead with a score in the 4’, while Aileen Zelaya rounded out the 5-0 scoreline with the team’s final goal in the 51’.
Group E at the Sabina Park Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica, saw Panama earn a narrow 1-0 victory against hosts Jamaica on an Analia Arosemena goal in the 38’.
The second match of the day at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez was a Group D showdown between Puerto Rico and Nicaragua, and it would be the Caribbean side getting the 2-1 win.
The Boricuas enjoyed a dream start thanks to Lauryn Smith, who struck for goals in the 8’ and 16’ to make it 2-0 to Puerto Rico. Nicaragua pulled one back in the 39’ through Emma Quintanilla, but in the end, Puerto Rico were able to see things out to earn the three points.
